Ignition Interlock Device

Dallas DWI Attorney

Fort Worth Ignition Interlock Device Lawyer

If you were arrested for DWI and you had a very high breath test result for blood alcohol content (BAC), or you had previous DWI convictions on your record, a judge may order you to consume no alcohol as a condition for allowing you out of jail on bond. The judge may order an ignition interlock device.

While it may be embarrassing to have the ignition interlock device right there in the console of your car, to have to blow into it to start your car and to blow into it every 10 to 15 minutes for a rolling retest, it can actually be a big benefit. An ignition interlock device is one way to establish that you have met the terms of your release.

If you have an ignition interlock device on your car, you can prove that during the 6-9-12 months it took for your felony DWI case to get to court, you were, in fact, not driving and driving. That can help you get a better sentence if you are ultimately convicted of a felony DWI.

Don't Have a Car?

Because an ignition interlock-type device documents that you've been able to meet the terms of your bail, people who no longer have a car may want to have a similar device in their home. You blow into the device at set periods when you are at home.

Another option is a SCRAM bracelet (secured continuous remote ankle monitor) that gauges whether you have consumed any alcohol. This is a lot more cumbersome so fewer people would choose this option.
